H054: Academic Alert System (Beginner)

Carla Bates – Missouri University of Science and Technology

Missouri University of Science and Technology has developed a Web-based academic alert system to assist students who are at risk of failing, with the secondary goal of increased student retention. We will share information on the system’s planning, creation and results, hoping to generate ideas for your own similar systems. This system, used as early as the first week of classes, is used to alert students to academic deficiencies. By reaching these students early, we hope to correct problems so that the students can succeed academically.

H052: Building Data (S)Marts (Beginner)

Jim VanHorn – University of Central Missouri

In the spring of 2008 the academic deans at University of Central Missouri requested that a data mart be created to provide trend analysis reporting. The university had already completed conversion to the SCT Banner ERP. In addition to the reporting functionality, the deans requested a comprehensive data dictionary to aid in understanding the data that was being stored in the data mart. A task force representing all the stakeholders across campus was formed and the initial kickoff meeting was held on June 16, 2008. The initial academic data mart was delivered in February 2009.

H051: University Enterprise: From Virtualization to Single-Sign-On (Advanced)

Joel Sovanski and Shawn Frank – Lincoln University

In the summer of 2008 Lincoln University upgraded from Novell eDirectory and Sun One Messaging to Microsoft Active Directory and Exchange 2007. The entire move was implemented within a VMware virtual environment for a significant ROI. At the same time we redirected most services to a single authentication point of Active Directory using LDAP, RADIUS, 802.1x and SAML2.0. We further implemented a web- and client-based self service password reset utility, and student e-mail was transitioned to Google Apps with single-sign-on back to Active Directory.
